Why I want to teach Art...
Putting My Heart into Art
I have always admired my art teachers. I can name all of my art teachers starting from first grade. (Mrs. Histand, Mrs. Wizenhunt, Mr. Mc Hugh, Mr. Hubuka and Mr. Berger.) These people invested more time in me than my own parents. As a young learner I got encouragement from my art teachers, and more importantly I got noticed by an adult. I want to be that person. I want to become a professional that plays a role in developing the next generation. I think I could have a really positive impact upon learners because I have a genuine interest in seeing them succeed.
The reason I believe I will be an effective teacher is because I have a strong work ethic that I want to transfer to my students. I believe that great teaching needs great relationships, and my developing pedagogy relies on that basic framework. When students can access their teacher it helps to maximize growth and learning. I enjoy being around the cultivation of people and skills, and the classroom is the perfect place for that. I want a career not a job, and have devoted my efforts for the last six years to learning how to become the best art teacher I can.
My prior life experiences will help me connect with my students. My goal is to find a place where I can impact students the way my teacher did me. My teachers were the first sober adults I interacted with. If I can be that person for a student, I know that my all my work will have paid off. With teaching I would get to help learners make themselves into the people they want to be, not the people life kicked them into being and how to break free of the cycle of poverty. I want to show students from both sides of the resource gap that their education is one of the best paths to success. I have a real passion for helping and I will find teaching art to be challenging and rewarding. It is a career that is worth doing well.
Teaching art specifically calls to me because I feel it is the place where all other subjects can merge together and be applied. The content area gives the opportunity of voice in a different form than vocal. Students can make their own learning in a safe and constructive environment. I have a passion for making, and I hope that students will find it contagious. I can only hope that someday, a college student will be writing about their educational experiences and my name will be remembered as the ones I listed above.
